EURO-TITAN: Decarbonized Titanium Recovery from Aluminium and Titanium Production Residues

EURO-TITAN becomes a pioneer in the development of continuous Ti resources from metallurgical waste streams from alumina and
Ti-dioxide production and develops 54 ktpy of Ti metal, making Europe completely independent of Russian Ti metal sponge
imports, which are essential for the production of alloys for the transport and medical sectors. To this end, an industry-led consortium
which will utilise experience from previous and ongoing projects to recover metals from industrial waste (Scavanger, Scale,
Scale Up, Valore) will develop a >90% lower CO2 emission (compared to the conventional Kroll process, where
10tn per tn Ti), a green hydrogen-fuelled (ref-hyd) direct Ti reduction process is being developed, which will be used for the production of Ti until demonstration at the
at the Bosnian Al plant to produce customised Ti metal products for ingots or alloys. Our
Ti metal price will be 15% lower than that of imported Ti (rough estimate 6800 €/t Ti compared to current prices
from Russia and China at 8500 €/t). Process optimisation will be achieved through the integration of inline real-time data
real-time data monitoring, the establishment of a repository for high-quality and trustworthy data sets and the integration of artificial intelligence. This
will lead to a 10% reduction in energy and water consumption on site, while at the same time minimising the
interruption. Finally, the circular economy will be ensured by recycling the remaining residual materials into innovative (30 % less co2
emissions compared to cement-based building materials), while the water is recycled and the surplus thermal energy is used for local households.
